Kumbh Mela is one of the largest festival in India where around 20 Million people expected for 2015 at Nashik.There are 4 cities in India hosting the Kumbh Mela once in every 12 years.The basic problem faced by every city during the event is managing the crowd. History shows that every year people die due to stampedes which are caused due to false alarms.
Currently, various technologies are used which are only for monitoring purposes.
1. Cameras can be used for counting people using face detection but it has limitations like limited angle of vision and probable errors in count
2. Optocouplers are used in metal detectors but not feasible for Kumbh Mela.
3. Approximations are done based on ticket sales but doesn't help in managing crowd.
Considering the pros and cons of the above options, the only option to count such crowd is using their FOOTSTEPS.
